Proceeding from the Judaeo-Christian tradition, Speling creatively and systematically explores contemporary spirituality and mysticism. It produces thematic issues.
Sometimes the themes are explicitly religious, such as the Our Father (the entire volume for 2002), dying, saints, the Christian tradition, or 'spirituality as a supermarket' (2001).
Often it deals with attitudes and experiences that are commonly recognised as significant and meaningful but are not considered directly religious: selfishness, anger, shame and anxiety (2003), or ordinary existential spheres like living at home, travelling, fleeing and following (2002).
The aim is invariably to highlight the religious dimension of the theme and its significance for our day and age.
Each issue contains a description of the phenomenon under consideration, a clarification in terms of history, biblical and mystical texts, and background information, explanation and present-day adaptations, contemporary experiences and visions, related artistic expressions and present-day illustrations.
In the selection and elaboration of annual themes the editors draw on the scientific research of the Titus Brandsma Institute and other theological faculties with which board members are associated.
