Geert Grote (Opera Omnia)

The publishing project Gerardi Magni Opera Omnia forms part of the Modern Devotion project of the Titus Brandsma Institute.

The aim is to produce a critical edition, with introductions, of the complete works of Geert Grote, founder of the 14th century reform movement in the Roman Catholic Church known as Modern Devotion.

The importance of editions of Geert Grote's major writings was a pp reciated at an early stage. Some have been published since the first half of the 19th century, others have never a pp eared in print. In the 1930s Titus Brandsma (1881- Dachau 1942), at that time a professor at Nijmegen University, launched a first attempt to make the complete works of this medieval Dutchman, who was a major influence on Catholic thinking, publicly available. For various reasons this attempt foundered, but since 1989 it has been resuscitated by the Titus Brandsma Institute.

The publishing project Gerardi Magni Opera omnia is headed by an editorial board comprising leading scholars in the field of ecdotics.

To date two volumes have appeared.

. Ioannis Rusbrochii Ornatus spiritualis desponsationis Gerardo magno interprete (CC CM 172), edited by Dr R.H.F. Hofman.
. The introductory volume, entitled Die Forschungslage des gesamten Schrifttums und kritische Edition des Traktates Contra turrim traiectensem, edited by Dr R.Th.M. van Dijk O.Carm. In addition to a short tract by Geert Grote, the volume contains a comprehensive introduction, detailing Grote's life and work and earlier editions (where applicable).
