Psalms Texts

The Titus Brandsma Institute's Psalms project aims at making Psalms accessible to a broader public through translation, research and actualisation. To this end it launched the Psalms Text, a series of 150 notebooks on individual Psalms. Each contains a new tr ans lation of the psalm, in which the poetic structure, actual wording, tensions and fault lines of the source text are examined as closely as possible. Each text also contains a manual on how to read and celebrate the psalm.

Each text focuses on one psalm only, giving it an opportunity to disclose its expressive power: its atmosphere, emotion, expressive power. The latter is what it is about: the spirituality of the psalm.

Through reading we want to discover what it says.
Through celebration we are conducted into its ambit.

Through our living we embody its emotion.
This explains the subtitle of the series: Psalmen lezen, vieren en leven [ Reading , celebrating and living Psalms].

Psalms Texts can be used in various ways:

  • For personal meditation: to deepen insight into Psalms and Scripture
  • For group meditation: in Bible study and meditation groups
  • For congregational and parish services, in teams or religious groups.

Twelve bound Psalms Texts have been published, respectively dealing with Psalms 1 to 62. CDs have been made of these twelve volumes. All this is a collaborative project of the TBI, the KRO and the Stichting Kerkmuziek en Spiritualiteit [Church Music and Spirituality Foundation].
In future the psalms will no longer be published in paperback (five psalms per booklet) but per quire (12 to 16 pages). The next Psalms Text currently being prepared contains the so-called pilgrimage hymns (Ps. 120-134).
