The Titus Brandsma Institute was established in 1968 as a form of collaboration between Radboud University Nijmegen and the Dutch Carmelite province in memory of Prof. Dr Titus Brandsma (1881-1942), Carmelite.
From the time when the University opened in 1923 until his death in 1942 Titus Brandsma occupied the post of professor of philosophy and history of devotion, especially Dutch mysticism. The Titus Brandsma Institute was established to continue Titus Brandsma's work on the study of spirituality and mysticism.
Aim
The Titus Brandsma Institute is a scientific research institute which, in keeping with the nature of spirituality, combines scientific and applied research. Accordingly its aim is the following:
scientific study of the premises, history and themes of historical and contemporary forms of spirituality in the Judaeo-Christian tradition, also with a view to
application of the results and insight gained from scientific research to provide spiritual counselling, {Author: actualising - in what sense? MM} interpretations, lived spirituality, and service to social, ecclesiastic and religious organisations.
To ensure the smooth functioning of research into spirituality, as advocated by the TBI, the interaction between the two aspects of this aim is vitally important and their distinctiveness is respected.
