Performing Mystical Love: Liturgy, Ritual, and the Arts

January 20-22, 2021

Conference for the Mystical Theology Network

In 2021, the Titus Brandsma Institute will host the annual Mystical Theology Network Conference themed Performing Mystical Love: Liturgy, Ritual, and the Arts. The conference explores the concept of mystical love and the ways in which mystical love expresses itself in manifold ways, including the liturgy, rituals, and the arts. It will investigate how, for many mystics, the liturgy has been a locus of mystical experience and how mystics have drawn on liturgical language and metaphors to give voice to the ineffable mystical love.  It will explore the connection between mystical love and a whole gamut of rituals and spiritual practices. It will hone in on theories on mystical love and the impact of mystical literature on the many ways love has been theorised in and has impacted various disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, literary studies, theory of religion, gender studies. It will also have a particular focus on the close connection between mysticism and a multitude of art forms, varying from poetic language to musical expressions.

In the light of the current COVID-19 pandemic , this conference will likely be postponed to a later date. This will be communicated as soon as possible.
